The residency interview process is a crucial step in matching into a residency program. Here's a brief overview to help you navigate this important phase:

Scheduling Interviews

After submitting your application through ERAS, programs review your materials and extend interview invitations. These invites typically start arriving in late September and continue through January. Respond promptly to secure your preferred interview dates.

Preparation

  1. Research: Familiarize yourself with each program’s strengths, faculty, and unique offerings. Understand what they value in candidates.

  2. Practice: Prepare for common interview questions and scenarios. Mock interviews with mentors or peers can be very helpful.

  3. Documents: Bring copies of your CV, personal statement, and any other required documents.

During the Interview

  1. Presentation: Dress professionally and arrive on time. For virtual interviews, ensure a quiet, well-lit space with a stable internet connection.

  2. Engagement: Be ready to discuss your experiences, why you chose the specialty, and why you're interested in that specific program. Show enthusiasm and ask insightful questions about the program.

  3. Behavior: Be polite and professional with everyone you meet, including staff and current residents. Your interactions will be noted.

Post-Interview

  1. Follow-Up: Send a thank-you email to the program director and interviewers, expressing gratitude and reiterating your interest in the program.

  2. Reflection: Jot down your thoughts about each program soon after the interview. This will help when creating your Rank Order List (ROL).

Final Steps

After all interviews, finalize your ROL in the NRMP system, ranking programs in the order of your preference.
